In this week’s Food News, fun lunch box ideas, a five-year-old’s first trip to McDonald’s, and Supercook.com:
Spice Up Your Lunch: Because I work at home, I do not eat good lunches. Often, I’ll grab some pretzels and peanut butter, a spoonful or two of leftovers, or handful of cereal. I graze. But, on the days when I have to go to class at night, I make a nice, healthy lunch and I always feel better afterwards. I’d like to eat real meals every day, but I run out of ideas. So this article about lunch box ideas in the Washington Post, written for parents who don’t know what to pack for their kids’ lunches, appeals to me too. Four professionals offer their lunch box ideas in categories – mains, fruits, veggies, and fun sides are some of the options. You choose your favorites to create your own unique healthy lunch box.
What Happens When Your Child Learns about McDonald’s?: In the New York Times magazine, Pete Wells’ five-year-old son, Dexter, learns from a friend that McDonald’s exists. And then he wants to go. This first page of this essay is nostalgic for anyone that used to love McDonald’s – my old memories include chipping my tooth on the Merry-Go-Round, ice cream sundaes with hot fudge or caramel, and, when I was older, singing the McDonald’s theme song on the radio, which won me a T-shirt. The second page goes into the history of apple pies, which I never ate, and therefore, could not relate to. Still, an interesting read.
Supercook.com: My friend, Alina, told me about Supercook.com, a great recipe-finder website. You enter all of the ingredients you have in your kitchen and the website will connect you to recipes. Today, I have kale, carrots, veggie sausage, sweet potatoes, pasta, rice, cilantro, and walnuts in my kitchen; I was connected to 200 pages of recipes using these ingredients such as chipotle copycat lime rice, bbq turkey smoked sausage with rice, and Portuguese green soup. The amount of recipes is overwhelming so I only looked at the first couple of pages. One tip: when you are entering your ingredients, you cannot enter them all at once, separated by commas. You enter one ingredient, click the ‘Add’ button, enter the second one, etc. Happy recipe-hunting!
