Time for Super Bowl Sunday! Those of us in the Northeast will likely be snowed in, watching the game with our spouses or kids or roommates. But for those of you who aren’t expecting a storm, or who are hosting a Super Bowl party anyway, I’ve put together a list of recipe ideas inspired by three players from each team. (lf you’d like to make food inspired by the city, check out Saveur’s menus for Indianapolis and New Orleans.) A special shout-out to Kenny, who told me about the players so I could match their game to recipes.
The Colts
1) Peyton Manning: Peyton Manning is a well-prepared quarterback. He studies a lot of film; he studies playbooks when the Colts defense is on the field. As a host, you can embody Peyton by being prepared with a dip for every palate at your party. Try spinach artichoke dip and six-layer dip for the traditionalists, two bean dip for the healthy eaters, and Alicia Silverstone’s cheesy, oozy guacamole bean dip for the vegans.
2) Dwight Freeney: Defensive end Dwight Freeney is fast. And because he can get to the quarterback quickly, he makes a lot of sacks. Translation in the food world: a dish inspired by Freeney would be one with an ingredient or two that can stand up to the protein in a dish. Try chicken skewers with spicy harissa, coconut shrimp, and cookies made with chocolate chips, pecans, and coconut.
3) Reggie Wayne: Then there’s Reggie Wayne, the experienced wide receiver. He’s got good hands; he’s reliable. On a Super Bowl menu that will please a crowd, there’s nothing more reliable than chicken wings. Try crowd-pleasing buffalo wings, or shake up your bird with Emeril’s Vietnamese-style chicken wings or asian hot wings dipped in sour cream with cucumber and scallions.
The Saints
1) Drew Brees: When I google Drew Brees, articles that come up at the top of the search focus on his charity work. Through his foundation, Brees has given money to restore sports fields and equip a weight room at a diverse school called Lusher. An article in NorthJersey.com says Brees is playing the Super Bowl “for millions of Gulf Coast residents still trying to rebuild their lives.” To embody Brees, celebrate the spirit of New Orleans with Emeril’s shrimp and sausage jambalaya, John Besh’s bourbon pecan pie, and beignets.
2) Darren Sharper: The food equivalent of safety Darren Sharper – a man who gets interceptions, returns a lot of touchdowns, and is always in the right position to surprise the offense – are dishes that have an unexpected flavor that stands out. Try Israeli hummus with smoked paprika, chicken wings with coriander and lime, and meatballs with chipotle chilies, mint, and bacon.
3) Reggie Bush: Running back Reggie Bush is a utility player: he can run the ball, catch passes in the backfield, and return punts. So if you want to make food inspired by Reggie, look to party fare that can be served in many ways like salsa. Try spicy salsa, pineapple salsa, and orange onion salsa on foods like chips, fish, and steak.
I’m routing for the Saints. Go New Orleans!
