Have you ever experienced Late Night? Years ago, this was a term for when college dining halls reopened in the late evening hours. But for me, Late Night also meant that I could finally eat as late as I wanted for the first time ever. And that made it an exciting, memorable event.
So yesterday I was excited to learn that my essay on Late Night Eating had been posted on Smithsonian magazine’s Food & Think blog as part of their Inviting Writing series. (Inviting Writing was one of 5 Opportunities for Food Writers that I mentioned last week.) If you remember Late Night, take a look and reminisce with me, then check out Food & Think’s links for more fun food essays on college food.

Congrats Jen. Must check out your essay.
Ahhhh late-night. I used to love getting the waffles, but the line was sooooooo looooooooooooong.
Also, I have a feeling we were in the same college at the same time in the same quad. I often went to the “Incon” for flavored coffees. Why was it so fun to pull all-nighters?
I loved this essay – thanks for letting me reminisce.
Congratulations on the post! We didn’t have late night at my school, but you could go to the pub and have a “midnight meal” which was usually (for me) chicken tenders and fries. I think my stomach just rolled over and groaned when I typed that.
@Wendi, thanks!
@Nakiya: All-nighters were a great time! I could never pull one now though. Why does that happen? Also, did you go to UMCP? If so, great job remembering the name of the convenience store. And thanks for reading the essay!
@Beth: Greasy and sugary foods seem to be a college theme. I couldn’t handle it now either, but it was fun then!
Yup! I went to College Park, lived in Cumberland and was in the Media, Self and Society scholars program. I graduated college in 2004, you?
Nakiya, we missed each other by a few years. I lived in the Centreville and was in the Arts Scholars program, but graduated in 2001. I don’t think they even had a Media, Self, and Society program then! (And we used to have to walk 20 miles to campus in 10 feet of snow…
