I loved this post -- beautifully written! And I too have written just a handful of fan letters--most of them I can't remember; the only one I can remember was to Paul Michael Glaser (of the original Starsky & Hutch) for similar reasons to yours to Chad Allen ;-)

Oh, what a wonderful post. Thank you. A college classmate at my 30th reunion this weekend pulled me aside and told me that my blog should focus on my life in Poland. She implied that people would be/are really interested in that. A former teacher and editor at the New York Times also told me that he was especially interested in those entries. But you know what? I don't really want my readers to be my editors, assigning me topics. Hey, if they did, then they ought to pay me like my other editors do.

I get the most heartfelt responses from my reflective personal essays. Yes, those are the posts that I'm most insecure about, but when they work, and they occasionally do, they are by far the most satisfying.

Thank you for this post.

As a girl, I was obsessed with Katherine Hepburn, the famous actress of the 40's, 50's and 60's and saw her perform Eugene O'Neill on Broadway. I had a rose from dinner in my hand as I waited at the stage door after the performance. I wrote a handwritten letter to her soon afterward. This was 1976 and I was 16. I was delighted to receive a handwritten note back from her. I don't know if I still have it.

@barbfreda: I never saw Jamie Oliver's show, but it sounds fascinating. I'll have to see if the videos are online. I've never thought pizza was such a bad food either. I guess it depends what you get on top of it and how much of it you eat, but there's nutrients in there too. We never had pizza burgers though. It was always slices of of plain cheese pizza. They were really popular, but I never thought they looked that tasty at my school.

My kids had more choices, but worse food. We still had "real" lunch ladies who were cooking the lunches. Pizza burgers (burger buns topped with crumbled ground beef in tomato sauce, all that topped with cheese--not much wrong (or difficult) with that in my book) was ALL of our favorite meal. That was the day we always bought lunch.

I absolutely agree about the presentation being important and I love your friend's idea of putting the fruit and salad closer to them...

I didn't watch to the end of Jamie Oliver's experiment in W. VA (I was watching online)--I must go check to see how that turned out in the end. he WAS having a hard time convincing the staff and meeting budget and guidelines (which included two starches per lunch, an outdated approach at best..)
